What is Walk Talk Therapy?
Walk Talk Therapy is a counseling session conducted while the client and counselor take a walk. Sometimes sitting in an office staring directly at a counselor can be intimidating and vulnerable. In Walk Talk sessions, the client and the counselor are moving along the same physical path, discussing the client’s concerns as they go.
What do I need to bring?
Comfortable walking shoes. The first counseling session will meet in office, and all initial paperwork can be completed. In subsequent sessions, if we meet at the walking path, all forms of payment are still accepted.
What if I am not in good shape?
No problem. The client sets the pace, and there are benches along the path, should we need to rest or process something difficult. Walk Talk Therapy is primarily a counseling session, and the focus is on the therapy process. Although numerous studies show the positive effects walking has on depression, anxiety, and “clearing the mind,” the exercise during these sessions is a helpful addition, NOT a professionally planned exercise program. If appropriate, please check with your doctor to ensure there are no medical conditions that prevent you from participating in Walk Talk Therapy
What about bad weather?
The client chooses whether to have the session in office or walking. Should a last-minute storm or other types of bad weather arise, we can meet at the office and conduct the session indoors.
What if I see someone I know along the path?
Because this is a walking path in Chattanooga, it is normal to see people walking and talking together. Typically, a slight nod of the head is enough to greet the other person. As your counselor, I will take your lead in whether you choose to address someone on the path. At no time will I compromise your confidentiality or acknowledge you as my client, unless you introduce me as such. While I cannot guarantee your anonymity as a walker along the path, I can guarantee your confidentiality as my client.
Where is the walking path?
Currently there are two options: 1. We can meet at a Riverview Park (1857 Riverview Rd ) which is one block from the office (parking is free along the road). OR 2. We can meet at an entrance to the Tennessee River Walk on Spring Street. (adjacent to the Bluff View Art District. Parking on Spring Street is free.)
