It has been said that through relationships we are wounded and by relationships we are healed.  Having myself experienced the power of healing relationships, it is my aim as a counselor to foster a collaborative, healing relationship that provides safety for healing and growth. Many factors affect a person’s ability to thrive as an individual and in relationships, including the residual effects of loss and what has been done to a person, patterns of relating learned within one’s family, internalized beliefs about oneself and the world, and relational and spiritual disconnection.

I assist clients in understanding their struggles in the context of their family of origin while also helping clients to gain insight into their internal and interpersonal struggles. I also incorporate trauma awareness into treatment (aka, awareness of the emotional, relational, and spiritual effects of what has been done to a person or experienced by a person). This includes teaching basic skills to manage emotions that feel out of control (including not experienced at all), assisting clients process the traumatic experiences, and moving beyond surviving to thriving.

When working with couples, I practice from an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) approach.  This means that I view a couple’s relationship as an attachment relationship wherein each partner is “wired” to experience safety, security, and love from the other person.  Most issues in the relationship are ultimately the result of attachment insecurities and wounds that are triggered and reacted to.  I strive to help couples first recognize the cyclical, distressing patterns they are stuck in and learn new patterns.  Then, I strive to help couples foster the safety, security, and connection they long for in the relationship.

I am a Christian and integrate Christian spirituality into my practice when this is desired and meaningful for a client.  Research shows that outcomes in treatment are improved when a person's faith is incorporated.  For me, the foundation of Christian counseling is the recognition that each client is loved with incomprehensible Love and has been bought with an immeasurable price.
